On Philippine history and a blog :)

Just yesterday, I and the BF quizzed us (aside from the hand wrestling) about History and Math and just as I thought I’d win, well, NOBODY did! Math, he won, as always, but when it comes to History, believe it or not, nobody knew who the father of Rizal was.

So before my memory will completely turn against me, I’m going to have a history review today not because I want to win the History part of the quiz but because as a citizen of this country, I want to rekindle the sense of patriotism and love for our country. Admit it, during the Pacman fights; we always feel a sudden rush of pride in our hearts when we hear this song…

National Anthem: Lupang Hinirang Lyrics
Bayang magiliw
Perlas ng silanganan
Alab ng puso
Sa dibdib mo'y buhay
….
Fact:  Its music was composed in 1898 by Julián Felipe, with lyrics in Spanish adapted from the poem Filipinas, written by José Palma in 1899. (wikipedia.org)
Do you know that it did not have words when it was adopted as the national anthem of the Philippines during the proclamation of Philippine independence on June 12, 1898? It was only in August 1899, José Palma wrote the poem Filipinas in Spanish. The poem was published for the first time in the newspaper La Independencia on September 3, 1899. It was subsequently adopted as the lyrics to the anthem (wikipedia.org)

The Philippine National Flag is the national emblem of the country. It signifies unity and national identity. It expresses the Filipinos’ sentiments for freedom, equality and justice.

Fact: "National Flag has the unique distinction of being the only flag in the world signifying peace or war. In time of peace, the blue stripe is on the top of the red. In time of war, the red stripe is on top of the blue. The equilateral triangle is symbolic of equality among men. The eight rays of the Philippine sun in the triangle represent the first eight provinces that revolted the Spanish rule. The three stars on each corner of the triangle stand for the geographic divisions of the country: Luzon, Visayas, MIndanao. The red stripe symbolizes the willingness of the Filipino to shed blood in defense of his country. The blue stands for common unity and the noble aspiration of the Filipino people."

And we seem to be hopeless today because of China’s mighty military force claiming what’s obviously ours when even in the most darkest times of our country, he said, “Pen is mightier than a sword.”

National Hero: Dr. Jose P. Rizal

Born: June 19, 1861 in Calamba, Laguna
Died: Dec. 30, 1896 in Bagumbayan
Wife: Josephine Bracken
Parents:Francisco Mercado Rizal and Teodora Alonso Realonda
Education: Opthalmologist; Ateneo de Manila, UST, University of Madrid and further studies in Paris and Heidelberg; well-educated and well-travelled

National Tree: Narra
Branching in auxilliary clusters, the Narra blooms for about one week in profusion, itsef florescence wafting scented fragrance as the dry season wind blows.
Also my favorite fish! Inihaw, caldo/sabaw, prito or adobo.. the best! One of the luxuries being a Filipino.

National Fish: Bangus
Fact: Do you know that Bangus, even when cultured in the ponds, came from the sea? There’s really a “Mother of Bangus” called the Sabalo that bears all the Bangus fingerlings which, as the law stipulates, shall not be caught nor sold!

National Bird: Philippine Eagle
Philippine Eagle (also known as the monkey eating eagle). At present, the Philippine Eagle is one of the most endangered birds of the planet, with only about 500 birds in the wild.

National Animal: CARABAO

Sabi nga ni Nanay D ni Manny, “Bradley, huwag mong i-hug ang anak ko sa leeg, hindi siya kalabaw!” Understood?

National Flower: Sampaguita

Sampaguita is a white flower with a single or double layers of fragrant petals. According to folklore, its name was derived from a lover's promise to his lady fair: "Sumpa kita" translated as: "I promise you."

The flower called Sampaguita (Jasmine variety) by the filipinos was adopted as the National Flower of Philippines in 1934. It also happens to be the National Flower of Indonesia.

National Costume:
MEN: Barong Pilipino. It is along-sleeved shirt made of pina cloth with hand made elaborated embroidery.
WOMEN: Baro at Saya. The baro't saya is a two peice apparel. The baro is a blouse and the saya is a skirt. It could be a Maria Clara, a balintawak, a malong, a patadyong or a terno.

National Day: On June 12,1898, independence from the Spanish rule was proclaimed by General Emilio Aguinaldo. The Philippines celebrates this day as its independence day
