Just
yesterday, I and the BF quizzed us (aside from the hand wrestling) about
History and Math and just as I thought I’d win, well, NOBODY did! Math, he won,
as always, but when it comes to History, believe it or not, nobody knew who the
father of Rizal was.
So
before my memory will completely turn against me, I’m going to have a history
review today not because I want to win the History part of the quiz but because
as a citizen of this country, I want to rekindle the sense of patriotism and
love for our country. Admit it, during the Pacman fights; we always feel a
sudden rush of pride in our hearts when we hear this song…
National Anthem: Lupang Hinirang
Lyrics
Bayang magiliw
Perlas ng silanganan
Alab ng puso
Sa dibdib mo'y buhay

Fact: Its
music was composed in 1898 by Julián Felipe, with
lyrics in Spanish adapted
from the poem Filipinas,
written by José Palma in 1899. (wikipedia.org)
Do
you know that it did not have words when it was adopted as the national anthem
of the Philippines during the proclamation of Philippine independence on June 12, 1898? It was only in August
1899, José Palma wrote the poem Filipinas in Spanish. The poem was
published for the first time in the newspaper La
Independencia on September 3,
1899. It was subsequently adopted as the lyrics to the anthem (wikipedia.org)
The Philippine National Flag is the national emblem of
the country. It signifies unity and national identity. It expresses the
Filipinos’ sentiments for freedom, equality and justice.
Fact: "National Flag has the unique distinction of being the only flag in the world signifying peace or war. In time of peace, the blue stripe is on the top of the red. In time of war, the red stripe is on top of the blue. The equilateral triangle is symbolic of equality among men. The eight rays of the Philippine sun in the triangle represent the first eight provinces that revolted the Spanish rule. The three stars on each corner of the triangle stand for the geographic divisions of the country: Luzon, Visayas, MIndanao. The red stripe symbolizes the willingness of the Filipino to shed blood in defense of his country. The blue stands for common unity and the noble aspiration of the Filipino people."
And we seem to be hopeless today because of China’s
mighty military force claiming what’s obviously ours when even in the most darkest
times of our country, he said, “Pen is mightier than a sword.”
