MAGNUM Magnifico : A Royal Review :)

It’s the fab. It’s the “it”. It’s the Magnum ultimate taste bud experience!

I hate to sound so provincial and ignorant about this newest and fab-best buzz in town, I know it has been four (4) luxurious months since it was launched in the country. In fact, the kind of star-studded launching with shining-shimmering-splendid garbs that an A-class won’t miss.

So here’s the story…

With rumbling stomachs and a cold weather, Mr. Evangelista (the boyfie) and I went out to scout for an (un)earthly food in a small grocery store nearby, and guess what? We just had a taste of seventh heaven at 50php times two! Admittedly, though gibberish in a chilly weather, this is our first time to have a grab. We chose Magnum Almond (milk chocolate coating with crunchy almonds) and Chocolate Truffle (creamy chocolate covered with crunchy Belgian (!) rich chocolaty sauce). # Definitely NOT your ordinary ice cream!

For chocolate lovers like us, mouth watering and “sarap ulit-ulitin” is an understatement! I really love that rich milky chocolate feeling that melts in my mouth and oh, the crunchiness of the chocolate coating—I must say, it’s all love, love, love! I felt my taste buds rejoiced and at the same time, craved for more. Do you know Royce chocs? Well, tastes like it.

The Cons:

It’s a little bit pricey at Php 50.00 per bar and not to mention the looming high fat content. I suggest that we should practice a little abstinence for this one. Well come to think of it, this is a premium ice cream bar and therefore, perfect for occasional celebration of wins or other milestones in our life.

Am I buying Magnum ice cream bars in the future?

Absolutely! My boyfriend and I really liked it, in fact, we love it so much! If you haven’t tasted it yet, please do. Indulge yourself, we all deserve a royalty treat once in a while. Let’s just say, a royal reward.

Welcome to the family of DeckLei’s favorites-Magnum Magnifico!

On Philippine history and a blog :)

Just yesterday, I and the BF quizzed us (aside from the hand wrestling) about History and Math and just as I thought I’d win, well, NOBODY did! Math, he won, as always, but when it comes to History, believe it or not, nobody knew who the father of Rizal was.

So before my memory will completely turn against me, I’m going to have a history review today not because I want to win the History part of the quiz but because as a citizen of this country, I want to rekindle the sense of patriotism and love for our country. Admit it, during the Pacman fights; we always feel a sudden rush of pride in our hearts when we hear this song…

National Anthem: Lupang Hinirang Lyrics
Bayang magiliw
Perlas ng silanganan
Alab ng puso
Sa dibdib mo'y buhay
….
Fact:  Its music was composed in 1898 by Julián Felipe, with lyrics in Spanish adapted from the poem Filipinas, written by José Palma in 1899. (wikipedia.org)
Do you know that it did not have words when it was adopted as the national anthem of the Philippines during the proclamation of Philippine independence on June 12, 1898? It was only in August 1899, José Palma wrote the poem Filipinas in Spanish. The poem was published for the first time in the newspaper La Independencia on September 3, 1899. It was subsequently adopted as the lyrics to the anthem (wikipedia.org)

The Philippine National Flag is the national emblem of the country. It signifies unity and national identity. It expresses the Filipinos’ sentiments for freedom, equality and justice.

Fact: "National Flag has the unique distinction of being the only flag in the world signifying peace or war. In time of peace, the blue stripe is on the top of the red. In time of war, the red stripe is on top of the blue. The equilateral triangle is symbolic of equality among men. The eight rays of the Philippine sun in the triangle represent the first eight provinces that revolted the Spanish rule. The three stars on each corner of the triangle stand for the geographic divisions of the country: Luzon, Visayas, MIndanao. The red stripe symbolizes the willingness of the Filipino to shed blood in defense of his country. The blue stands for common unity and the noble aspiration of the Filipino people."

And we seem to be hopeless today because of China’s mighty military force claiming what’s obviously ours when even in the most darkest times of our country, he said, “Pen is mightier than a sword.”

National Hero: Dr. Jose P. Rizal

Born: June 19, 1861 in Calamba, Laguna
Died: Dec. 30, 1896 in Bagumbayan
Wife: Josephine Bracken
Parents:Francisco Mercado Rizal and Teodora Alonso Realonda
Education: Opthalmologist; Ateneo de Manila, UST, University of Madrid and further studies in Paris and Heidelberg; well-educated and well-travelled

National Tree: Narra
Branching in auxilliary clusters, the Narra blooms for about one week in profusion, itsef florescence wafting scented fragrance as the dry season wind blows.
Also my favorite fish! Inihaw, caldo/sabaw, prito or adobo.. the best! One of the luxuries being a Filipino.

National Fish: Bangus
Fact: Do you know that Bangus, even when cultured in the ponds, came from the sea? There’s really a “Mother of Bangus” called the Sabalo that bears all the Bangus fingerlings which, as the law stipulates, shall not be caught nor sold!

National Bird: Philippine Eagle
Philippine Eagle (also known as the monkey eating eagle). At present, the Philippine Eagle is one of the most endangered birds of the planet, with only about 500 birds in the wild.

National Animal: CARABAO

Sabi nga ni Nanay D ni Manny, “Bradley, huwag mong i-hug ang anak ko sa leeg, hindi siya kalabaw!” Understood?

National Flower: Sampaguita

Sampaguita is a white flower with a single or double layers of fragrant petals. According to folklore, its name was derived from a lover's promise to his lady fair: "Sumpa kita" translated as: "I promise you."

The flower called Sampaguita (Jasmine variety) by the filipinos was adopted as the National Flower of Philippines in 1934. It also happens to be the National Flower of Indonesia.

National Costume:
MEN: Barong Pilipino. It is along-sleeved shirt made of pina cloth with hand made elaborated embroidery.
WOMEN: Baro at Saya. The baro't saya is a two peice apparel. The baro is a blouse and the saya is a skirt. It could be a Maria Clara, a balintawak, a malong, a patadyong or a terno.

National Day: On June 12,1898, independence from the Spanish rule was proclaimed by General Emilio Aguinaldo. The Philippines celebrates this day as its independence day

One day, I’m gonna make the onions cry…

It sounds downright hilarious, ain’t it? I felt the same way reading it the first time, and just like any other funny things you've stumbled upon, I brushed this one aside. Few seconds gone by and I hurriedly went back to read this line again and realized that it bears some depth in it.

Not all of us tried to slice onions but for sure, we all heard that it makes everybody cry without ever making an effort to break our hearts. Allium cepa (onions), once sliced, cells are broken, permitting alliinases enzyme to break down amino acid sulfoxides and generate sulfenic acids that cause eye irritation. But we’re not going to do hara-kiri (suicide) in this cerebral discussion of scientific terms and what not!

What I really want to say is that, there are people in this world, and they sprout themselves everywhere, make it a career being onions! In their smelly disposition (literally or figuratively, whichever fits them better), they love making other people cry.  And I really can’t understand why (them) people resort to destroying others? Where does this unfathomable ruthlessness come from?

I guess it's safe to say that this onion attitude was passed on from one generation to another and so on. The parents didn’t know better but mirror what them old parents taught them. Somehow, we can’t really blame onion people. And just like how we see real onions, they are irritating to the eyes but important to the kitchen. No matter how it makes you cry, onions give you more reasons to spice up your life!

If you happen to read this, let’s not be an onion to our kind, even animals demand respect. Let’s be responsible of our words and actions because, (aside from the reality of life being a cheap commodity nowadays), what we say defines who we are.

If you keep on talking negative things about others, put them down or look down at them, try to destroy them to advance yourself from the competition or you just find pleasure in hurting people, back off! You’re not helping yourself or some masters that you’re trying to please.

Remember Karma? It exists. For even in His words; don’t do unto others what you don’t want others do unto you.

Don’t wait for that day, I'm gonna make the onions cry...

Marry Me...

Every woman has her own share of fairytale in her life which usually comes true on that day that these three poignant words are uttered for no one else but you. And I, for one, have been dreaming of that time to come true.

But what if these three words were declared not once, twice but thrice by three different potential prince charmings? It sounds thrice the fun and three-fold the headache!

I’m actually talking about this modern day fairytale movie starred by Lucy Liu. She’s a gal who trusts in fairytale by heart and dreamed of settling down with her prince charming soon.
The Frog Guy...

The first guy with a built that swept me off my calloused feet, and can do it all over again without fail, is her two-year relationship partner, Bobby Cannavale. I can’t forget this part; he prepared a dinner for their 2nd year anniversario while she already exclaimed to the world that she’ll be engaged that night and there-- the guy left her for FROGS! He got a grant that allows him to chase frogs and get paid. How oddly-cool life can be?
The Too Good To Be True Lad...
And so the 2nd boyfie gets in the picture via blind date arranged by a Priest Uncle who, on their first date, already announced that she’s to be his partner for life. If I am Rae (Lucy Liu) I would say yes in a minute! He’s handsome, intelligent, financially stable, self-assured and not to mention delicious (?), we can forget about the last part. He’s so good to be true and this is exactly the reason why our Princess couldn’t take him.

While I sincerely believe that she loves my bet (this guy), everything turned topsy-turvy when the FROG guy (1st boyfie)  got in the picture again with all his muscles and flowers and promises.

The Princely-Rich and Playboy Best Friend...

And the fiasco multiplied! She got caught by the present boyfie kissing with the ex on the porch! Things got messier when his extremely rich with exceptionally cute smile and exceedingly fine-mannered best friend secretly told her that he wants to marry her as well. (when he could have asked me instead? KIDDING, Derick!)

Who wouldn’t want a first-class à la mode shopping spree in London? This guy can grant all her wishes and caprices and a castle too!

So who would she choose?

Born To Love You Review (Major F!)

Just yesterday, wanting to have the fastest escape despite the drizzling weather, my Lola Helen, Derick the BF and I went out to watch this movie and…

KAPOOSH! MAJOR FAIL!

Who would dare do a debut movie without waxing upper lip hair? I know I’m good at exaggerations but what can I say? It’s very excruciating to watch that moment when they first met, he looked at her, she turned to face him and BAM!—Bigote?  I gasped my heart out!

What’s more painful to watch is the “artist” look of Coco with the long hair on the side and the unshaved Bigotes' on his face, they are everywhere! Looks like they are intentionally pairing Bigote to Bigote in this movie, or at least, the silly impression it gave me? But come on Star Cinema, the budget could have at least included styling and scrubbing (?) of Angeline to make her pleasing to watch as painless as humanly possible. And what’s with the “s” sound of Coco Martin? It’s bothersome.

I was expecting a comedy-musical movie simply because that’s what Angeline is about and I liked the idea of pairing her with this enigmatic, reliable Coco Martin. BUT what I saw was a messy story plot of a little-bit-of-everything! This excessively melodramatic movie coupled with slow-phased talk of Angeline PLUS the stilted dialogue multiplied by the overly musical scoring put me to sleep. Why do movies nowadays revolve around one big messy mushy theme song, a singer-turned-actress matched with a matinee idol in a semi-comedy, semi-drama story? It’s becoming more and more predictable.

But don’t get me wrong, I like Angeline Quinto and Coco Martin, this explains why I chose this movie over Snow White and the Huntsman. It’s just so disappointing that these two great personalities have to undergo a very catastrophic project. Angeline, I admire her, she seems to be very resilient despite the challenges she have encountered in her life. There’s the mother who have her adopted, several failed attempts in singing contests on TV and multitude of critics. Above all these, she still manages to smile and do her thing. Her singing prowess is divine. We all know she can belter her way to success. I feel that she has a talent for acting too, given the right training, right time, and right project.

Anyhow, if not for the love of my Granny and the sweet company of Derick, I would have left the Movie Theater albeit the 95php entrance fee (HAHA).

Like I said, I might have exaggerated things but as far as personal view is concerned, this is what I have in store.

MIB 3 (Quick Review)

First Thing: DON’T EAT!
Those gooey-green-slimy-mucus(y) substances are way off for my stomach! It was like swallowing 1,000 kilos of okra and hundreds more for dessert! I’m all DIZZY! Especially that scene when they were inside this Chinese Restaurant which turned out to be owned by a Chinese alien serving scarily-gruesome alien food. Please, just don’t unless you can take all that.

The Summary: I CAN’T LAUGH HARD ENOUGH.
Agent J (WILL Smith) has a very big issue that perplexes him more than aliens, and that’s his partner, Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones), that old guy with a wry smile who doesn’t allow anybody to swoon over his rather dull past life.

Not until a villain from Planet Luna (?) had escaped and messed up with the time to kill Agent K during an encounter some ages ago. So Agent J time travelled to save his partner, the planet and eventually, his own life. Which means you’ll get to see old Agent K in his 30’s!

The interesting part is seeing the high-tech gadgets of the past and comparing it to the agency’s tech today. The camera thing that makes you forget was then in BATTERIES! Holler! There’s this time when Agent K’s car got busted by the villain and then suddenly, when what seemed to be a dead end for both agents, K did a voice activation and BAM! Two futuristic motorcycles came out of the car and they were inside a big circle--looks like a vehicle inside a wheel.
And more actions…

The Secret: MADE ME CRY.
The past of K and J will now be unraveled. Ever wondered why Agent K picked J and J alone as a partner? They are connected in the past, a very emotional connection. Of course, K can’t be J’s father! But somehow.. You’ll know when you'll watch the movie.

"Dials down the creepy-crawly alien effects and ups the human element for this trip down the time tunnel, with a running theme of mortality, fatherhood and uncovering the mysteries of the past."

All in all, it’s a SO-SO. Meaning, I can skip watching this movie without regrets in the future.

Please click that "Join this Site" thingy and let's get connected! Will appreciate it if you'll leave a comment and tell me what you think :) Please and Thanks!

Little Wings

June 1st, five o’clock in the afternoon, almost a normal day in our ordinary house until a tiny bird was shown to me. The bird is just about days old and so I was told that this poor little thing is now homeless, foodless and mommyless. The rain poured very hard this afternoon that their lightweight nest got thrown by the forceful wind and off they fell to the ground with it.

With nothing left but few more hours to live, we have decided to give them the best care that we can give. In our humble home we made a nest out of white cloth, sticks, and few leaves, hoping that the birdie will have a good rest. So it did, such a relief!

“But wait!” cried out by one of our maids, “there’s one more here, this too we shall take!” Now we have two little birds with tiny wings. We know that they won’t make it but at least we did something about it, we tried to build their home inside our own.

What about the mother bird? Is it looking for these four little birds she left out of her sight? Or does it easily forget and move on with dear life? Oh, I forgot to tell you about that sad part, two of these birds died.

How such a pity life can be, it brings you to the world then suddenly flee. The wind is not made by any but only Thee and yet if Thy will is always good then why such mortality?

But who am I to question Thee, your words are wisdom, your deeds are divine. Whatever purpose this incident may be, I take it that you’re teaching something to me. That life is not about trying to live and survive but the quest to find Your value in our lives. The love you have amidst misery.

At least, birds go to heaven.

P.S: They are still alive at 10:30pm.

Live in love <3

Little Wings

0
